CSC 513: Electronic Commerce Technologies

Motivation

The contract project's purpose is to familiarize students with the concepts on contract, clause, and norm. The project has two parts: I and II.

Part I: contract clause type annotation

Choose one of the real life contracts according to the rule below and mark all the clauses in the contract with the type name (e.g. monitoring clause, privacy clause) specified in lecture slide number 5 (original number 129/26). You can save the online contract in pdf or word and mark with Adobe professional or MS word.

Part I is an individual effort, and you only need to annotate one of the five contracts above. Divide your student id number by 5, and the remainder is the id of the contract which you need to annotate. E.g., if your student id is 000-819-333, 000819333%5=3, then you are only required to work on contract #3 Shareholder agreement.

Part II: contract norm type annotation

You are given a collection of sentences in file PartII.xlsx. These sentences are automatically extracted from Sharp-Danger manufacturing contract (the first 200 sentences) and Mitsubishi-InterTrust licensing agreement (the last 300 sentences). Note that some of the sentences may be not well formed because they are extracted from the contract with a program. You are required to fill out PartII.xlsx. In the file, there are six fields (Label, Reason, Subject, Object, Antecedent, and Consequent) to be filled in. First decide if a sentence contains a norm and what norm it is by choosing one of the "Labels" (Not a norm, Practical Commitment, Dialectical Commitment, Power, Authorization, Sanction, Prohibition). If you decide a sentence does not contain norms, you don't need to fill in "Subject", "Object", "Antecedent", and "Consequent" fields. If you decide a sentence contains a norm, go fill in "Subject," "Object," "Antecedent," and "Consequent" fields, and the two fields "Antecedent," and "Consequent" should be filled with excerpted text from the sentence instead of your own paraphrase. Finally, fill in "Reason" field describing why you select the label and why you choose the antecedent and consequent. In case that a sentence contains more than one norms (not very often), create new rows right below the sentence and fill in the seven columns (Label, Reason, etc.). The first two lines of file PartII.xlsx show an example of filled fields.

Part II is an individual effort, and you only need to label 50 out of the 500 sentences. The last digit of your student id number decides which sentences you need to annotate. You are only required to work on sentences whose id number last digit equal to your student id number last digit. E.g., if a student's id number is 000-819-370 (last digit is 0), he is only required to work on sentences # 0,10, 20,...490; if a student's id number is 000-819-371 (last digit is 1), he is only required to work on sentences # 1,11, 21,...491.
